Shine Peer Support Volunteers

Shine now has two Peer support volunteers working in the East of England to add greater value to its existing services. The volunteers can offer peer support to individuals, parents and families on issues relating to spina bifida and or hydrocephalus. We now have a peer support volunteer based in Norfolk and one based in Suffolk so local contact is available in both counties. Peer support volunteers can support you via email or telephone, meet with you, listen and share your experiences, problems and achievements related to spina bifida and hydrocephalus. It is time to let it shine as Queensgate shopping centre has announced its new charity of the year, Shine – the UK’s largest organisation dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus. In the first of a series of special family events, this summer will see the charity launch Benny Bear’s birthday party where mascot Benny will be out and about throughout the centre to delight little ones and provide entertainment. Did You Know?

Babies born prematurely are at increased risk of developing hydrocephalus.

Para-athletes with spina bifida and hydrocephalus compete in sports ranging from cycling to dressage.

Each used mobile phone or ipod donated raises around £5 for Shine.

Hydrocephalus may affect memory, concentration and behaviour.

The usual treatment for hydrocephalus is to insert a shunt into the brain.

CSF stands for cerebro-spinal fluid.
