Shine's work to improve our members' health and management of their own health is central to our goals as a charity. Our in-house Health team offer expertise built over decades of clinical practice in nursing, occupational health, physiotherapy and more.
As Shine's support begins before birth, our Health Team and Support Workers cover a wide range of information, advice, support and signposting; around pregnancy, early years, continence, puberty, mobility, and learning, working, living and aging with the spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
Around 25% of our membership turn to Shine for more intensive 1-2-1 support each year. Between November 2024 and November 2025, Shine worked to resolve inquiries through personalised, 1-2-1 support for around 5,000 people.
During this period, Shine resolved more than 2,000 specifically health-related inquiries, questions and concerns for our members and their families. 2,000 people gained the confidence to self-advocate for their needs through contact with Shine and more than 1,500 people told us they had improved knowledge of their conditions and were enjoying better health and wellbeing as a result of Shine's support.
