How to leave a gift in your Will

Thank you for considering leaving us a gift in your Will. Every pound you donate makes a difference to the support we can provide our members.

Making a Will - your complete guide

How to get started

To make a new Will or change an existing one we would recommend speaking to a solicitor for independent advice and to ensure your Will contains the correct legal wording.

If you do not have a solicitor, The Law Society can help you find a suitable one in your area.

In England and Wales, go to www.lawsociety.org.uk or call 0207 242 1222.

In Northern Ireland, contact the Law Society of Northern Ireland at lawsoc-ni.org, or call 028 9023 1614

Before talking to your solicitor

When writing a Will there are a few formalities that you must consider first.

Many people have relatively straightforward financial and family circumstances. If that’s you, then a simple Will from a solicitor, Will writer or online provider will be suitable.

However, using a solicitor is particularly important if your Will is not straightforward.

What information is required

If you'd like to include Shine in your Will, please ask your solicitor or Will writing service to use our full name, address and charity number to ensure we receive the gift:

  • Name: Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus, Information, Networking, Equality - SHINE
  • Registered office: Unit 4, The Forum, Minerva Business Park, Peterborough PE2 6FT
  • Registered charity number: 249338 Company registered in England and Wales number: 877990

Type of gift

You might also want to think about how much you want to give, and what type of gift you’d like to make. There are three main ways you can include a gift to Shine in your Will and help our vital work continue long into the future:

  • A share of your estate

Once you’ve provided for your loved ones, you can leave a share of whatever remains to Shine. Also known as a residuary gift, it can be any percentage you like, it’s up to you - and because this gift is a proportion of your estate, it keeps pace with inflation.

  • Fixed sum of money

Also known as a pecuniary gift, this is a gift of a specific amount of money. If you do decide to leave this type of gift, it’s worth reviewing from time to time as inflation can reduce its value.

  • Gift of a specific item

You can also choose to leave a particular item to Shine, such as a piece of jewellery, an antique or even a property. A gift like this should be specifically named in your Will.
