Spina Bifida Awareness Week 2019

Shine are launching Spina Bifida Awareness Week on Friday 25th October 2019.
Awareness Week is a great opportunity to help raise awareness of Spina Bifida and bring the 'Back to the Front' of people's minds.

Shine would like everyone to get involved in this year's Spina Bifida Awareness Week by making a pledge to tell someone about living life with the condition.

We are also launching a new fundraising event 'Back to Front', a fun way for your workplace, school, or social club to help us raise funds and bring the 'back to the front' of people’s minds. We need your support to spread awareness of Spina Bifida, but just as importantly, we need to continue to find ways to raise money so we can keep on supporting and improving the lives of those affected.

For ways to get involved, or information about the conditions and the work we do, see below or join in the conversation online using the hashtag #BackToFront and by tagging @ShineUKCharity

Hydrocephalus Awareness Week is launching 7th February 2020! More information coming soon...

Why we need your help...

One in every 1,580 pregnancies will be diagnosed with Spina Bifida*. It is a neural tube defect (NTD) and occurs during the first month of pregnancy when the spinal column fails to close, leading to life long physical and learning challenges.

Whilst the exact cause remains unclear, studies have shown that increasing your folic acid (a readily available B vitamin) intake three months prior to conception can reduce the chances of developing the conditions by as much as 70%.

More than 80 countries across the world currently add folic acid to white flour, an initiative proven to dramatically reduce instances of NTD's.  We want the UK to be next. Join our 'Fight for Fortification'

What is spina bifida?

Spina bifida literally means ‘split spine’. A fault in the development of the spinal cord and surrounding bones (vertebrae) leaves a gap or split in the spine. The spinal cord has not formed properly, and may also be damaged.
