Shine celebrates Spina Bifida Awareness Week in October each year. This important week helps us highlight the condition, what it means to live with spina bifida, and what support Shine can offer. We'd love you to be part of it! There are always plenty of opportunities to join in and get involved in celebrating our spina bifida community in the lead-up to and throughout the week.

Find out more about spina bifida

If you, a friend or a loved one has just had a diagnosis for a type of spina bifida, or you are looking for more information on the conditions and treatment options, then we have a hub of resources dedicated to spina bifida and support we can provide to you.

Understanding Spina Bifida in Adults

Our new resource - Understanding Spina Bifida in Adults - will soon be available to order!

Let us know you'd like a copy by filling in your details here, and we'll be in touch when it's available to buy.

This new resource is a comprehensive guide for individuals, families, and healthcare professionals. A great amount of planning, research and gathering contributions from experts in the fields of health and spina bifida has gone into making this guide possible. A huge thank you must go to Shine’s Health Team (especially our Head of Health, Gill Yaz, who led on production) and our Health Advisory Panel who, between them, spent many hours writing, reviewing and quality assuring the information. And of course, a thank you to all the Shine Members who responded to our survey and shared so much about their lives and the effects of living with spina bifida.

Join us for Spina Bifida Awareness Week 2025

Join us during the week of 20-26 October 2025, and help us celebrate our wonderful community. There are lots of ways you can get involved...

Share your experiences

Our goal is to show what living with spina bifida is like - what it is really like - at all ages and stages of life. And who better to show it than you! We'd love to share some of your thoughts and experiences.

Here are a few prompts to get you started:

  • What would you tell a friend about spina bifida?
  • What do you think people should know about the condition?
  • What would you tell your younger self, knowing what you know now?

Contact us if you have something you would like to share. It can be an anonymous quote, or a full story.

Remember, only share what you're comfortable with us sharing publicly on Shine’s social media channels, and make clear any details you want us to keep private.

Get involved

Of course, awareness is just one part of the week, Spina Bifida Awareness Week is also a great time to come together to fundraise. Not only does fundraising help Shine continue to support the spina bifida community, it also amplifies our voices when raising awareness.

Our lovely team at Shine really do put the 'fun' in fundraising, and they have lots of inspiration if you're keen to get involved - check it out here.
