Why is it important to have a hospital passport?

Better communication: A hospital passport helps ensure your condition/s and needs can be understood at any time. Hospitals can be confusing and it can be hard to explain everything you need to. Some people might have problems communicating either because of existing communication difficulties or language barriers, or because of the circumstances surrounding admission to hospital e.g. if you are unconscious or otherwise unable to talk. With a hospital passport you also shouldn’t have to repeat so much of the same information and it can help avoid misunderstandings.

Memory aid: When you have a complex medical condition, it can be hard to keep track of your current and past medical history as there is so much to remember. Having all your information in one place means you don’t have to worry about forgetting something important.

Reduce stress: Hospitals can be overwhelming, particularly if someone has past trauma, sensory sensitivities, or cognitive difficulties. A hospital passport can help staff adapt their care to minimise stress and accommodate your needs. It can also help someone feel more in control because their needs are written down for staff to see.

Faster, safer, better treatment: Providing healthcare staff with quick and easy access to key medical and personal information enables quicker and better decision-making, reducing treatment delays and helping make sure your treatment is more personal and suited to you.
Overall the hospital passport is a helpful tool that allows staff to understand and respond to your needs more quickly. It ensures that the care you receive is right for you, even if you have difficulties explaining things yourself.
