Shine's Legal Service - Leo's Story

Soon after Leo was born a lump was found on his spine and he was diagnosed with lipomyelomeningocele, a type of spina bifida. Leo’s parents were told that his development and walking may be affected and there could also be issues with his bowel and bladder functions. Leo’s parents didn’t expect to hear this news following the birth of their son and wanted to find out answers to the questions they had.

Leo’s parents approached their solicitor to try and find out whether Leo’s spina bifida should have been diagnosed during pregnancy. With the help of independent experts, the solicitor established that the lipomyelomeningocele was visible on a detailed 20-week pregnancy scan.

The solicitor started a legal claim on behalf of the family and a settlement was agreed with the Hospital Trust. This allowed Leo and his family to move to a more suitable and accessible home which had sufficient space for his therapy and equipment. Leo’s parents are also able to fund the specialist care, therapy and equipment that Leo needs both now and in the future.

His mum and dad now have peace of mind about the future and Leo, who is now 8-years-old, really enjoys the Playstation and riding his electronic dirt bike on this field behind his house, just like any other boy his age.

Shine were also there for Leo and his parents right after his birth and put them in touch with other families; they found great comfort in the support they were given from the charity and those in similar situations.
