The charity Shine is delighted to announce that Kate Steele (MBA) has been appointed as the charity’s permanent Chief Executive.

Kate takes up the reins of Shine, the national charity which supports people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, following a successful interim period as Acting CEO since May last year.

Shine Chairman, Richard Astle, commented:

“As Acting CEO, Kate showed how capable she is, steering the charity through tough financial challenges and changes to establish a strong and sustainable footing on which to build. Now, as our substantive CEO, we are excited about the future and what Kate has to bring as she leads Shine forward.”

Kate, who took over the interim role in May 2015 from Jackie Bland, the charity’s CEO since March 2009, was formerly director of Shine CYMRU and of the charity’s regional services in England. She comes with a background in services development and over 15 years of management experience in the third sector.

Kate comments: “I am absolutely delighted to be given the opportunity to lead Shine at such an exciting and challenging time - and in Shine’s Golden Anniversary year too!”

Kate continues: “As a membership organisation, Shine is committed to developing and strengthening services, support and advocacy for people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. These complex conditions require specialist support, but there are so many barriers to overcome to access the support that families and individuals need. That’s why the work of Shine is so important and why we must continue to grow and develop for the future.”

As Director of Shine CYMRU, Kate has taken an active role in advocating to improve continence and wheelchair services in Wales, including representation at the National Assembly and Chairman of the Posture and Mobility Stakeholders’ Representative Group. She has also contributed to numerous strategies and policy work, including the Welsh Government’s ‘Together for Health - Neurological Conditions Delivery Plan’, which was launched in Wales in 2014.

Kate has also been an Executive Committee Member and Treasurer of the Wales Neurological Alliance (WNA) since 2013.

Shine will be celebrating its Golden Anniversary this year with events around the country, beginning with the official launch service at Peterborough Cathedral in April.
