Shine’s Annual Ball Exceeds Expectations to Help More People Living with Spina Bifida and / or Hydrocephalus

27th September 2019

PETERBOROUGH-based charity Shine hosted its second annual ball last week. Thanks to the kindness of all guests on the night and a generous, single donation, the Ball raised £12,000 for Shine to support its ambition of improving the lives of people with spina bifida and / or hydrocephalus (SB/H).

120 people attended the event, which was held at the Holiday Inn – West. Local businesses, friends and family of Shine, and some of the very members who benefit from the organisation’s services – many of whom had travelled from far and wide – were amongst the names on the guestlist.

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire’s Kev Lawrence compered, while revellers were treated to a three-course meal, live music from local band Children of the Revolution and a raffle which was generously supported by many local businesses. To boost funds, Queensgate Shopping Centre Peterborough donated a generous gift as Shine have now been made Queensgate Charity of the Year.

They also heard from two inspirational speakers who are living successful lives with spina bifida – Dr Andrew Mitchell, Head of School of Sport Science and Physical Activity at the University of Bedfordshire, and Ruth Madeley, the BAFTA award winner and star of BBC1’s Years and Years.

Caricaturist, Luisa Calvo, and Bourne Photography Studios were both on hand to create memories that would last long after the final tune of the evening was played by DJ Asif, who just happens to be the charity’s corporate fundraiser when he’s not behind the decks!

Shine Chief Executive, Kate Steele, said “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who came and helped make the event such a fantastic success. We’re a small charity and these are difficult times in the sector, so to raise more money than we did at last year’s ball is a huge achievement. Special thanks goes to our entertainment sponsors, Buckles Solicitors.

“The specialist support and expertise we offer makes a huge difference to our 12,000 members across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Thanks to the enormous generosity of our guests last week, we can continue to reach out to those who need us, and to help make sure that nobody faces the challenges of spina bifida and / or hydrocephalus alone.”
