Volunteers' Week - Celebrating Hazel

1st June 2021

As part of National Volunteers' Week, we're celebrating some of the wonderful people who've supported Shine over the years. From Ambassadors to Fundraisers, Peer Supporters to Trustees, all playing a part in making sure Shine supports its members of all ages.

Meet Hazel, who has been a Shine Peer Support Volunteer for many years:

“I like to volunteer for Shine because I’m one of the rare ones that had a lot of operations  - 22 – and my mum and dad were told I wouldn’t survive. I’m now 50! And I want to get the message out there that I’m living proof that you can have Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and live life to the full.”

Our peer-to-peer support volunteers provide a listening ear for members who have similar conditions. They are able to recognise  issues that may affect Shine members with spina bifida and hydrocephalus and offer support based on their own experiences and/or refer them to Shine staff for information, support and advice.

If you would like to find out if there are any volunteering opportunities in your area for Shine please call 01733 555988 or email firstcontact@shinecharity.org.uk
