Spina Bifida Awareness Week 2021 - Fiona's Story

17th October 2021

Fiona's Story...

"The only thing I can say that has helped mentally in the last year is the Zoom chats and quizzes."

My mum took me with my non-disabled sister to ASBAH, now Shine, meetings when I was a small child. My dad was in the army. We didn't attend the meetings long.

I found Shine in more recent years as Shine’s Health Development Manager, Gill, has represented Shine at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital (my hospital), also the previous Health Advisor Robin who left Shine a few years ago.

Robin was the only one able/willing to listen to me, apart from when I attended my yearly hospital appointments, regarding my depression and anxiety issues.

As far as how Shine has supported me – a Shine Support and Development Worker helped with my PIP application. I have not had support regarding my Physical Disability.

The only thing I can say that has helped mentally in the last year is the Zoom chats and quizzes by Support Development Worker, Debi, and Shine Surrey Volunteer Aziza. I have met several new friends via Shine’s Facebook Groups in the last year or so because of being a member.
