Hydrocephalus Awareness Week 2022 - Karen's Story

7th March 2022

Karen's Story...

"Shine Support and Development Worker Debi made a Care Needs Assessment for me, an OT Assessment, and contacted Adult Social Care in my area to get me the right support."

What was life like before you received support from Shine?

"I had just lost my dad a little while before my phone call from Shine Support and Development Worker Debi. My dad had been my carer, and I found myself living in my family home alone and without support. I did not have a job and I wanted to move to Mansfield in Nottingham where I used to go to college when I was younger."

How has Shine supported you?

"Shine Support and Development Worker Debi made a Care Needs Assessment for me, an OT Assessment, and contacted Adult Social Care in my area to get me the right support. I then started to receive support from my Local Authority’s Adult Social Care who referred me to the 100 Club for support through a local charity with someone phoning due to the pandemic lockdown at that time. I then found I had the confidence to relocate with the support from my Local Authority’s support worker.

My brother sold our family home, and I then had the funds to buy a flat in Mansfield.

Debi from Shine then supported me by making referrals through my new Local Authority and my care was transferred. I then had support through their enablement programme and still have the same Support Worker who now only provides support when I need it the most. I was also referred for travel training which helped improve my confidence on public transport. I then received support with another OT referral from Debi for bathroom and kitchen adaptions. I have a date for the renovation coming up this month and next.

I also received support from Debi to build a new CV and managed to gain employment as a swimming teacher and I work at my local leisure centre three days a week.

I have recently had the confidence to apply for a volunteer position as a Support Worker in a Supported Living Home for young people through my Local Authority after being referred by my Support Worker."
