Recognising individual skills

Recognising individual skills

During the pandemic, many of our face to face volunteer roles were put on hold. However, that didn’t stop our volunteers who were keen to try out other opportunities that we created and this included John who has become a key member of our Trusts and Foundations team.

John initially responded to a call-out made by the Trusts and Foundations team for some help with some desk-based database work. We had a brilliant response and spoke to several lovely Shine volunteers about the work, before asking John if he would like to take on a volunteer role within our team. After completing the initial project John has gone on to help with a research project, volunteering regularly with the team and joining meetings to stay up to date with all things Trusts and Foundations! It’s been a real pleasure getting to know John and the work he has done for our team is invaluable.

John says, “'I wanted to volunteer with SHINE to thank them and give something back for the help I have had from SHINE over the years and allow SHINE to help other members. I find home-based volunteering suits me very well. The staff in the Trusts & Foundations team have made me feel very welcome and part of the team – the Trusts & Foundations Manager contacted me a week or so after I started to thank and welcome me to the team, which I thought unusual but a nice gesture. The only regret I have about volunteering with the Trusts & Foundations Team, [is that] I could not have started sooner.”
