Shine Celebrates Milestone in Public Health with Mandatory Folic Acid Fortification of Flour

18th January 2024

Shine is delighted to share a significant development in the prevention of neural tube defects like anencephaly and spina bifida. After over three decades of relentless advocacy and campaigning, our efforts, along with those of eminent scientists and the wider health community, have culminated in a landmark decision by the UK government.

The government has confirmed that mandatory fortification of flour with folic acid will proceed as planned. This decision, following the initial announcement in September 2021, marks a pivotal moment in public health and preventative care.

Kate Steele, CEO of Shine, expresses her enthusiasm: "This is fantastic news. We are yet another step closer to seeing this important UK public health initiative become a reality. Shine has been campaigning for the mandatory introduction of folic acid to flour for over 30 years, as this has been proven to reduce the chances of pregnancies being affected by neural tube defects."

Shine has been at the forefront of this campaign, driven by our commitment to the health and well-being of those affected by spina bifida. This development not only validates our efforts but will change the future for countless families across the UK.

While the implementation journey continues, with full introduction anticipated around 2026, Shine remains dedicated to educating and supporting our community, ensuring that everyone is informed and prepared for this positive change in public health policy.

We extend our gratitude to our members, supporters, and partners who have joined us in this long-standing campaign.
