Hobble Hero aims to smash crutch marathon barrier in Guinness World Record attempt

10th April 2025

Diagnosed with the most severe form of spina bifida (Myelomeningocele) and having undergone nearly 100 surgeries, Hackney local, Patrick Stokes has faced more challenges than most.

This April he will attempt one more, with a mission to make history and set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon on crutches (male) - MP3, CID2. A feat never accomplished by someone with his form of spina bifida.

From barely being able to take a few steps to training for the TCS London Marathon, Patrick's journey is a testament to the power of the human spirit, but the challenge Patrick has set himself is not only about personal achievement. He will also be walking on crutches to raise vital funds for Shine, a charity that supports individuals living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, as well as their families and caregivers. Shine is very close to Patrick's heart, and he has set a target of £2000 - every penny raised will go directly to Shine.

After Patrick’s health deteriorated during the pandemic, he decided to fight back, literally one step at a time. He went from walking three steps in his living room to conquering miles on his crutches, culminating in this incredible marathon challenge.

Patrick's training regime is as inspiring as his story. From walks of 8-11km (5-7 miles) during the week to gruelling long-distance treks on the weekend, his most recent being 26km or 16 miles, he's pushing his limits to prepare for the 26.2-mile challenge.

Kate Steele, CEO of Shine, a charity dedicated to supporting individuals with Spina Bifida, praised Patrick’s efforts, saying, "Patrick’s determination to challenge the limitations of his condition while raising awareness about spina bifida is remarkable. He is not only setting out to achieve something extraordinary but also showing that with the right mindset, anything is possible. We wish him every success for the marathon."

Patrick will be doing the marathon alongside his brother, James, who also has spina bifida.

Patrick says, "I'm doing this for the child that was told they never could or never would. If I only inspire one person, that will do me."
