A Marvellous Donation!

29th March 2019

Shine has been chosen to benefit from the sale of a new book about Roald Dahl. We have received a donation of £625 from the sale of the book Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Medicine by Professor Tom Solomon, published by Liverpool University Press. A Marvellous donation indeed!

Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Medicine, released on the centenary of the author’s birth, covers an aspect of his life not many know about - his fascination with all things medical.

Beautifully written by Professor Tom Solomon, the book blends popular science, biography and memoir, and features anecdotes that Dahl shared with Tom as he looked after him towards the end of his life, the pair becoming fast friends.

As many of you may know, Dahl has an interesting connection with hydrocephalus. As featured in the book, he spearheaded the invention of the ‘Wade-Dahl-Till valve’ that helped thousands of children with hydrocephalus around the world, after his own son developed the condition.

The book also gives insight into the inspiration behind some of Roald’s greatest work, as he used life experiences, including medical conditions in his own, and his family’s life, as creative stimuli.

Other charities to benefit from the sale of the book are the Stroke Association, Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, The Walton Centre, The Encephalitis Society, and the University of Liverpool - all associated with Dahl or medical matters that concerned him. Published by the Liverpool University Press, the book is available to order from http://liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/products/83017 and other good booksellers.
