Book of the Month for April 2019

Over the past year, Shine has been recommending picture books, short stories, interactive books and novels with an inclusive and positive message for children and young people with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus of all ages.

This month, Shine is focusing on comic books with superheroes and super powers! What better comic book to choose than one inspired by and written by a Shine family, ‘The Department of Ability’!

‘The Department of Ability’ is written by Dan White, father of Emily, who was the inspiration for his amazing book.

Dan and family are Shine members and they have used their creative powers to make an exciting story with a positive message for us all.

Dan and Emily:

Emily, Superhero!

To understand how Dan got here, he points to the day that Emily – then three years old – was given her first wheelchair. Wanting to show his daughter other disabled people that she could relate to, he flicked through television channels with her. “But there was nothing,” he says. “Some educational stuff but nothing fun. No one there just as them, rather than ‘the character in the wheelchair’, so I did something about it.” (Source: The Guardian)
