Hydrocephalus and Learning seminars

23rd July 2019

In July, Shine held seminars on the potential affects of hydrocephalus on learning at three locations, Crawley, Leeds and Birmingham. The seminars were for Teaching Professionals, SEND Teams, and parents and carers.

Seminar in Crawley

The hydrocephalus and learning seminar was on Monday 8th July and was one of the last Shine events that Angela Bailey, Shine’s SDW for the area, worked on before the charity waves her a fond farewell at the end of this month. The seminar, kindly hosted by Irwin Mitchell solicitors, was a well-received event with excellent presentations by Sarah Papageorgiou, CNS at St George’s hospital, Erin Smart from Irwin Mitchell, who spoke about legal duties of local authorities, and there was a touching presentation from a parent’s perspective by Claire Oliver.  Jan Tippett, Shine’s national education officer, provided information about the effects of hydrocephalus upon learning and gave advice about classroom strategies and helpful technology for education settings.

Seminar in Leeds

The hydrocephalus and learning seminar was on Wednesday 10th July. There was an opportunity to do a few fun activities at this event to show teaching and learning. This time the CNS was Louise Higgins, from Leeds General Infirmary. Jo Grenfell, Shine education officer for the north was also involved, as was a representative from N&WY ASBAH.

Seminar in Birmingham

The hydrocephalus and learning seminar was on Monday 15th July, this was the last seminar for this academic year. Kate Herbert was the CNS from Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital, the Irwin Mitchell speaker was Steven Baylis and Jan Tippett, Shine’s national education officer, gave a presentation about the effects of hydrocephalus upon learning, and advice about classroom strategies and helpful technology for education settings. Laura Varma, our SDW for the area, welcomed everyone and a parent member, Julie Steward gave her perspective of hydrocephalus.

This event was very well attended and Jenny and Paige came along from Shine's Health Team.

Thank you to all the speakers, attendees and to Irwin Mitchell for their hospitality and support.

Thank you to everyone involved for their positive feedback and suggestions to develop these information sessions.
