Children’s Group Assistant- Volunteer Role


The group meets 4 times a year for 3 hours In Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire the dates for 2019 are 8th June, 14th September and 7th December. Plus admin tasks leading up to the events.

To support Shine Development Worker, Liz Potts with the successful delivery of quarterly children’s group sessions for children with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus and their families.

Tasks will include:

  • Meeting and greeting families as they arrive and signing them in
  • Helping to serve drinks
  • Speaking to families
  • Monitoring the children playing on the play equipment at the venue
  • Signing families out on departure
  • Introducing families to each other
  • Introducing speakers
  • Helping in Parent discussion session
  • Overseeing Health & Safety
  • Liaising with Centre Staff
  • Designated person for calling 999?
  • Running the Group in SDW’s absence
  • Considering possible speakers/topics and arranging for them to attend the meeting.l

Ahead of the event:

  • Sending out invites to the event via Facebook, e-mail or post.
  • Keeping a record of replies

After the event

  • Compiling the Attendance Record and forwarding to Services Admin Team to record on database.

Training & support available

Full training will be provided before the volunteer starts the role and will include an induction to Shine, an overview of the conditions and safeguarding.

The Volunteer will need to have a DBS check.

Travel expenses will be reimbursed to the events.

Successful Volunteer would be expected to complete E-Learning Safeguarding Training at Level 1 - Awareness.  Support will be given to access this course.

The Volunteer will work in consultation with Shine SDW to agreed tasks.  Supervision will be available and access to support from the Regional C-ordinator in the SDW’s absence.
