Shine Voices - FAQs

We understand that you may have questions or concerns about uploading videos of yourself to the internet.  Check out our FAQ's below - we will continue to add to these as we receive new questions about the project.

How do I make a good video?

Watch our top tips guide to help you create the best quality videos.  If you want to make them even more interesting, check out our information about optional extras.

What should I talk about?

Shine Voices is your platform.  You can talk about any aspect of life with your condition that you choose.  You might want to celebrate an achievement, reflect on your youth, talk about your career, or simply share a useful tip you've picked up along the way.  Whatever you want to share, Shine Voices is there for you tell your story.

How do I send you my video?

Video files will be too large to email.  You can send them to use using WeTransfer, an industry leading file sharing site that will encrypt and deliver your video files to a secure Shine email inbox.  Simply visit www.wetransfer.com and follow the onscreen prompts, or visit here for more detailed instructions.

Can I add any extra videos or photos?

Yes!  We encourage you to do so.  Telling your story is great, but you can make it even more interesting by sending us extra videos which show the things you are talking about - for example, if you have a hobby, you could ask someone to film you taking part - you don't have to worry about editing your videos together, we will take care of that for you.

You might want to talk about an experience from your past, in which case you can send us photographs too, and we'll insert them into your video before sharing it.

Check out our section on optional extras for more information

Who can see my videos?

Videos created for Shine Voices will be shared on Shine's website, on social media and uploaded to YouTube - they are for anyone to watch, and anyone could see them - not just Shine members or people with the same condition.

How will you use my video?

Your video will be uploaded to the Shine Voices library - which is hosted on YouTube.  It will be featured on Shine's website and may also be shared on social media - we may also share your stories with potential supporters to help them understand more about life with the conditions.

What if I change my mind after i've shared my story?

If it hasn't been uploaded yet, you can contact us to request that we delete your film and disregard your request - Shine will then delete any and all versions of the film which exist on our servers.  If your video has already been uploaded to the library, you can still request that we take it down, however please note that any content which is posted online is basically permanent.  Even if we delete it, it is possible that it will have been shared, forwarded or reposted - there are also web archives that preserve content even after it has been taken down - with this in mind, we urge you to think carefully before taking part in the Shine Voices project.

How can I report inappropriate videos?

If you see something you aren't happy about in any Shine Voices story, you can let us know here.  Please note that all films will be thoroughly reviewed for suitability before they are shared to minimise the risk of inappropriate material being shared on the platform.

Can I film in a public place?

Yes, but remember, we can't use your video without consent from all who feature in it.  Don't film people you don't know, and be respectful of the privacy of people in the place you are filming. If taping in a public place, be sure to ask permission before including bystanders, and never take video of children without their parents’ permission.

If filming outdoors, try and avoid windy days or high traffic areas as this will make it difficult to hear you.

Can I say whatever I want?

We encourage you to be candid, open and honest about your experiences, and it’s your right to express your point of view, but Shine will not share or endorse aggressive, offensive or unpleasant material.

The aim of Shine Voices is to inspire and reassure, to let people in a similar situation know they are not alone and so we encourage you to treat everyone with respect.

Hate speech and bullying, including degrading comments about race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, gender or identity will not be tolerated.

Please remember that you can be held legally responsible if something you say about a person or organisation is proved to be untrue.

We reserve the right to make edits to your video to remove any unsuitable content, and sending your video to Shine does not guarantee that it will be uploaded to the Shine Voices library.
