Shine has a series of Shunt Alert Cards, for adults and children. These should be carried at all times by anyone whose condition is treated by a shunt, including hydrocephalus (with or without spina bifida), normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH).
All cards hold information about you, your condition, and your shunt. They also hold contact information for your next of kin and neurosurgical centre.
The cards emphasise that, if the cardholder is showing signs similar to those which occur when there is shunt blockage, shunt infection, or subdural haematoma then urgent assessment should be carried out in a specialist neurosurgical unit.
